My Year
in Books
2018

Introduction

My reading has really ramped up in the past couple of years.

I keep track of books that I read on Goodreads, and also in the β€œReminder Index of Important Entries” page in my Standard Memorandum which I turned into a book log.

Seeing the days I finished books at a glance was interesting, and it made me wonder more about my reading habits. How long were the books that I read? Did I read more books by male or female authors? How did my ratings of books compare to other readers on Goodreads? πŸ€”

I decided to put together some data on the books I finished in 2018 (I didn’t include books that I started and didn’t finish). What follows is some analysis on different aspects of my book reading.

Big disclaimer: I am not an expert in data analysis or books...this is just for fun! Please bear with me if things aren’t exactly scientific.

Books Read Per Month

I read 80 books in 2018. I read the most in November (11 books), and the fewest in June (3 books).

Book Format

I read most of my books as audiobooks on the Libby app. I can check them out from my library and listen to them on my phone. It’s awesome! Some consider this cheating, but I think it’s a great way to get some reading done while doing housework or on the road, and I’m not the only one who thinks so πŸ™ƒ

The longest book I read was Night Film by Marisha Pessl at 640 pages. The shortest was The Adventure of the Speckled Band by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, just 45 pages.

I read a total of pages,
and my average book length was
335 pages.

Fiction vs. Nonfiction

I try to read a mixture of fiction and nonfiction, but I definitely leaned more towards the fiction side in 2018.

Fiction Genres

For fiction, my most-read categories were mystery and horror

Nonfiction Genres

In nonfiction, I read memoir and true crime the most

Date of Publication

Because I frequent the amazing NPR Book Concierge to learn about good books to read, I ended up reading a lot of recently published books. The most common publication year that I read was 2018, but I tried and mix it up with titles from the 19th and 20th centuries every now and then.

Male vs. Female Authors

My author gender breakdown was fairly even, but I read more books by male authors than female this year.

Most Read Author

My most read author of the year was Stephen King β€” I read 8 of his books this year.

My Rating

πŸ‘

The book that I liked way more than other people on Goodreads was The Feral Detective. I loved this book! The premise was singularly bizarre, but somehow I still found myself relating to the main character. In today’s political climate, I understand the urge to disappear into the desert and live off of saguaro tamales. My positive impression of the book may have been helped along by a great audiobook performance by a very vocal-fried Zosia Mamet. (Me 5, Goodreads 3.1)

My Rating

πŸ‘Ž

The book that everyone on Goodreads liked way more than I did was Ender’s Game. I didn’t grow up reading the book as others may have, and reading it as a 30-something I found it real boring. (Me 2, Goodreads 4.3)

2018 Reading Resolutions

Strand Bookstore Reading Resolutions

Strand Bookstore shared a post on Instagram last year with six reading resolutions, which I thought was a great idea. I managed to keep them all!

Read a book that intimidates you

Jane Eyre by Charlotte BrontΓ«. It’s long and old, but I really enjoyed reading it.

Read a book you’ve lied about reading

On Writing by Stephen King. I thought I had read the whole thing, but I hadn’t! Not a malicious lie, but I’m counting it.

Read a short story collection

Evil Eye by Joyce Carol Oates was technically β€œfour novellas of love gone wrong.” I have a soft spot for JCO.

Read a book before the movie

Bird Box by Josh Malerman. I actually read this one before I knew it was going to be a movie. I wasn’t wowed by the book, but came to appreciate it more after watching the Netflix version

Read a book that is over 100 years old

Heidi by Johanna Spyri was published in 1880.

My top 5 books of 2018

It’s hard to choose favorites, but here are the ones that really stood out to me this year.

The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende

I enjoyed this book so much more than I expected to. It was an epic and generation-spanning story, but the magical realism made it fresh and unexpected.

Rosemary’s Baby by Ira Levin

As a big fan of this movie, so I was pretty excited that the audiobook was read by Rosemary herself, Mia Farrow.

Doing Harm by Maya Dusenbery

I wish everyone would read this. The women’s stories in the book were shocking and reinforced by my own similar experiences. It was overwhelming and depressing at times, but I’m so glad I read it.

A Constellation of Vital Phenomena by Anthony Marra

This was a stunning and eye-opening book, made even more incredible by the fact that it’s a debut novel. With beautiful writing and a haunting story, it will stick with me for a while.

The Mars Room by Rachel Kushner

This is another one that got a much higher rating from me than from the rest of Goodreads (me 5, Goodreads 3.52). Maybe those who gave a lower rating expected a more straightforward crime book, but I enjoyed the variety of stories and the sharp prose. Usually I am frustrated by an ambiguous ending, but this one struck me as just right.

My Reading Resolutions for 2019

Strand Bookstore Reading Resolutions

Strand was a little more ambitious with their reading resolutions for 2019. They posted a list of 25 ideas for this year. I cherrypicked my favorites and added a few of my own:

  1. Read a book of poetry
  2. Read a graphic novel
  3. Read a book across party lines
  4. Read a you've lied about reading
  5. Read a book from a genre you've never tried
  6. Read a book translated from another language

I know it’s wrong to choose a book by its cover, but something tells me I will be a fan of The Master and Margarita...
